Prior to today I had no issue running Win 8 with Thunderbird 17

Now when I open Thunderbird 17 the program opens - it appears in the task bar and also in task manager- but there is no window with the active program. I can hover over the task bar and see the preview. When I right click the preview, I can see the options to write an email or open the contacts which both work. When I click restore or maximize nothing happens. I can also click close the program which does work.

Any suggestions?

This can happen if you have dual monitor setup and you moved to the second monitor but you detached the monitor.

Try to hold shift and right click on the icon on the taskbar and click move. Use the arrow keys to bring it on screen.

Holding shift and right clicking does nothing. When I open TB in safe mode the program works. Apparently I have an issue with my TB profile.

Thanks for the help

Unable to open some windows from Taskbar

I am having a similar problem.
I wanted to see thumbnails instead of icons when I opened my pictures folder, so I went searching for how to do that on the web, and found a 2-part answer. I first went to Windows Explorer - View - Options - View tab - to uncheck the 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' box, but it was already unchecked.
On to the second part of the instructions: Right click Computer - click Properties - then I was supposed to click Advanced System Settings, which would then open a System Properties dialog, select Advanced tab - Settings - then checkmark 'Show thumbnails instead of icons'. I couldn't get past Computer - Properties. When I clicked on that, nothing seemed to happen at all, but then I noticed a 'System' button on the taskbar. When I tried clicking on that, the only thing that happened is that it turned a darker shade of blue. No System window opened up. Then I discovered that if I moused over the button, a preview of the Properties window would appear, but that is all it would do. I had the same thing happen last week when I tried to open the Screen Resolution window. Please advise. I was just starting to like Windows 8...kinda.

Tried the Shift - Right Click, - Move. didn't work.

I then went to the Start screen and typed 'Advanced System Settings' and chose Settings, and the file popped up. Unfortunately, the thing I was originally trying to fix - thumbnails instead of icons in my Pictures folder, wasn't fixable from there, either. It was already check-marked here, too.
