My previous pc died but I retrieved the hard disk which is now been converted into an external hard drive.
I have transferred all the stuff onto my new pc with windows 8 and also installed windows live mail. My previous system was Vista. The only thing I have failed to move are emails. I have tried importing to windows live mail. A new folder appears but there is nothing in it.

What email client program did you use on Vista?

(ex: Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail)

also was it a regular isp or was it a @live.com or @hotmail.com or @msn.com account?
if it was and you install Windows live Mail, once you sign into the account using the email account you had, it should bring in all your old messages and also your contacts.
If you had an account like Comcast, then you will have to follow Brink's suggestion.

Sorry I am not very good at this. I just have the HDD which is now connected to the new pc so I am not sure how I can boot into Vista. I can see an emails folder on the HDD which includes files but when I try to import it into Windows live mail it fails and I get a message to say that no messages can be found in that folder or another application is running that has the required files open.

No worries. :)

The emails will be .eml files.

In Windows Mail, the .eml files are located in one of your Inbox folders in the hidden (your email account) folder at the location below.

C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\(you email account)

You should then be able to drag and drop the .eml files into your Inbox folder in Windows Live Mail to have them added.
