Hello
When I want to send a page I am viewing to a friend, I used to click file>scroll to send> click 'link by email' and the link would go to my friend's inbox. Now those choices "link by email and page by email" are grayed out.
To remediate that in Win 7 I used to go to default programs and the grayed terms became black and it functioned.
For days now I have tried that. I right clicked the top of a page and selected 'link by email' and added it to the right in the customize box. When I tried it said I don't have an email program, which I do, or I have to set the default or file association. A year ago I tried the file association and made an awful error so I need to sure.
I have been copying and pasting the URL in the friend's inbox which is awkward.
I am an average user but if you could please help me with this I would be very thankful.
Thank you
Peter

email client

Hello
When I answered the questions to set up Win 8, Windows seemed to grasp everything. Example my sign in is my Hotmail address and the password is for this Hotmail one. I don't like that as I might have to change both sometime in my email program and I don't know if it would influence my signing in. If you know please advise.

But to answer your question, I have a live account which is basically Hotmail.
I used to have WLM with Win 7.
I also have a Comcast account and a Gmail account. I think I need a program that installs in the machine and not web based, correct? I think Comcast needs some port changes I am not familiar with.
Maybe that means Thunderbird?
I appreciate your help as Win 8 has some areas a little rough on average users.
Peter

what email program are you using ,like windows live mail ,outlook /AOL ect ect ,or is it a online email acct like gmail/hotmail ,yahoo, ect ect

Apologies for not being specific.

I do not have an email program like Outlook , WLM etc. I have a Hotmail account.

I need to be able to tic 'file' >scroll >'send link by email' as I used to with Win 7.

Please note, Win 8 did not include Win Live Essentials which contained the email program.

What program can I use? Thunderbird if necessary? Will it take over my mail as in signing on with the MS account?

Please help as I am really stuck.
Thank you
Peter

WLE will allow you to do multible ISP Accounts including live mail and comcast.
For comcast the only thing you need to do is change the port for the smtp to 587
then all should be fine

First, Caperjack, thank you for the link to Windows Live Essentials; the advisor that tells you what is compatible with Win 8 said WLE is not compatible if I upgraded. I did a clean install. Do you think it will be compatible after the installation of Win 8? I'd hate to install then have incompatibility issues.

Secondly, Robin9, thank you for the information about Comcast's port. Do you have any knowledge as to how you access this port to change it?

Thank you
Peter

solved

Windows live Essentials in Win 7 does not come with Win 8.

However, You can download Windows Essentials 2012 which is the same and is compatible with Win 8.

Caperjack pointed this out but it seemed odd that no one knew about this except him. Kudos.

It has the same programs as before ; mail, photos, etc. It solves the send to link I was encountering.

Great forum, great advice!

Peter

I don't know about you but I used to send a link which was blue so the recipient could just click on it and get to the site I referred them to.
Now the link is black and needs to be a copy/paste to the address bar.
It still works.
Comcast said they do not have information this far ahead.
I was hoping you had a suggestion to refine this feature although I'll gladly take it as it is.

success

Hi again
This is not the easy way in Win 7 but is not hard either. I think I have it.
I clicked on file, send, link, highlight the link and copy it, insert, click on hyperlink and it is an active hyperlink.
Thank you do much for solving this problem for me. I am very happy about it.
Blessed Christmas.
Peter
