Can't install other browsers

I was trying to get support from Adobe for a Photoshop Elements issue and they wanted to take control of my machine to help me. To do that they needed to install an add-in. It would not install so they asked me to download a different browser and then try it. I downloaded Firefox and Chrome, but neither one will install. Nothing happens. Can anyone help?

An HP Pavilion dv7 laptop. The issue with Elements is that after installing windows 8 and reinstalling Elements, it won't address my catalog anymore (which I house on an external hard drive). If you can help with that, then I don't need the other browsers. ;-)

for the catalog problem, did you upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 by using the upgrade process? Or did you install Windows 8 fresh? If you installed the system fresh with Windows 8, Adobe Photoshop Elements will not automatically recognize the catalog because the catalog was generated under Windows 7. It's like you had one librarian write down all the notes of where all the books are in the store but then you hire a new librarian and that new librarian doesn't know how the store was previously organized.

If you upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 and kept the programs and files, sometimes the association that binds the program to the files gets broken. This can especially happen if the hard drive letters changed. For example, your external hard drive was detected as drive D when you had Windows 7 but there were some changes to the system and it's recognized as drive E under Windows 8. Some programs are sloppily programmed and are easy to break.

You will have to reassociate the catalog. This can be done by regenerating the catalog. regenerating the catalog can be a pain and slow the first time you do it. but after that first time, it's easy again and quick.

or you can try this the tips here:

as for firefox and chrome, can you describe exactly what is happening? at what part does the installation fail? the easiest way to solve things is to download the installer to the desktop. and then install from the installer. a web install can be tricky sometimes.

Great. How do you regenerate the catalog?? I did the upgrade keeping my data only, so I reinstalled PSE11.

I did download the installer for both Firefox and Chrome. I then try to run it (tried as an administrator also). I get the dialog box asking permission to make the change; I say yes and then nothing happens. Nothing at all.

here's some links to the catalog:

here's a troubleshooting for the catalog:

and don't forget the previously link I listed.

as for the inability to install firefox and chrome... so after you gave permission to UAC to install the application, did you see the progress bar and installation of any files?

hit the start key (or windows key) on your keyboard and start typing firefox or chrome. do either show up on your list?

You mentioned that you were able to install photoshop elements. were you able to install any other programs?

I regenerated the catalog and even though it said the regeneration failed, it seemed to work. So, thanks!

For Firefox and Chrome, there was no progress bar and no installation of any files and neither of them show up on the apps list. Essentially nothing happened when I tried to install.

I successfully installed MS Office and iTunes.

your situation with Firefox and Chrome is really strange. I have both of those installed on my system, as do many people.

If I think of anything, I'll post. In the mean time, the Metro IE10 is really nice, especially if you have a touchscreen, and it's the best browser if you have a touchscreen or one of the fancy new trackpads. The regular IE10 is not too shabby (though I still prefer Chrome and FF).
