Office 2013 - Outlook cannot configure account

Hi there
PLEASE TO ANY DEVELOPERS OF SOFTWARE : Don't dumb the stuff down so much that it's impossible to repair it if it goes wrong.

Outlook 2013 won't set up an email account if the TEST SEND EMAIL fails.

This is a really stupid error on the part of the developers -- if you are in some places often your ISP won't let you logon to your email server to SEND email from programs like OUTLOOK (SPAM protection amongst other things) but insist that you use their webmail unless you are actually LOGGED ON to the ISP.

ISP's have no problem with you READING Email while on say a public / other Wi-Fi system but often restrict the SENDING of emails through their servers from such Wi-Fi accesses - you often have to be logged on to your own ISP.

So if you are trying to set up the account while you are staying in a Hotel and using their broadband service it fails -- all I want is to be able to READ email until I can logon at home.

I can SEND via webmail or mobile phone so the stupid install process shouldn't stop me CREATING an account even if for the moment I can't use it for SENDING.

GRRH! -- Don't the developers EVER speak to the END USERS any more before designing some install rubbish system like this.

Showstopper for me this one

Rolled back to Office 2010 -- Outlook 2010 works fine - you can SKIP the test email send --this is what they should allow on Outlook 2013 as well. !!!!!

Cheers
jimbo

Maybe some "stability updates" will be released. Always the same problems with new software...

Good thing I couldn't upgrade (no free offer or reductions).
The Office 2010 runs super fast on my laptop and (for me) there's no need for another version for the moment.

Hi there
On Outlook 2010 you get THIS in the test account settings --- you can uncheck the box and it's fine

Why didn't they leave this option or don't they realize people at least READ email when they are travelling away from their home ISP. !!!

Cheers

I had some problems initially setting up Outlook 2013 with my POP3 ISP e-mail account but I tried a couple more times and it eventually worked. It all works fine now but I could not tell you why it didn't work the first couple times.

I actually have two different Outlook 2013 profiles - one for the POP3 account and one for an Exchange account I have. Both are working fine with Outlook 2013 on Windows 8 x64 Enterprise.

Hi there
all good and fine
but WHAT DID YOU ACTUALLY DO when the test email account settings appeared and it failed.

If it passed the test and you received a test email then you obviously hadn't understood my original post.

How many times did it take? I have copied my account settings LETTER FOR LETTER, CHARACTER BY CHARACTER, off my Office 2010 account and they won't work on Windows 8/Office 2013. I'm wondering if there's an issue with my connection, but ???? What would that be? The Windows 7 machine is connected right now on the same connection and it works fine. Windows 8 box won't. UGH.

Oh, and my problem isn't the outgoing test e-mail. Mine is the Incoming Server. Won't connect!

And you checked all the same boxes and entered the same ports and everything? (have to ask)

Yes, and I wish I had counted the number of times I tried, because I seem to have hit the magic one. Eight, nine? Answer is 42?

However, you'll note my new, improved eightforums username, as it's telling me I don't have an account, I click Reset Password thingy, it says it will send me an e-mail, it's the ONE EMAIL that doesn't arrive, so I start all over with my gmail account as Paranoid Girl B.

It's Workaround Wednesday here.

I'm not sure if this has been resolved for jimbo45, if it has, further information would be great because I'm encountering all kinds of similar problems. For the sake of everyone who finds this post in the future, I have found what appears to be some useful information at Outlook won't Connect to Outgoing Server - Slipstick Systems. I'll have to wait until tonight to see if it solves my problems though...

My office IMAP server fails the Test Account stage of setup and so I can't add it to Outlook 2013. I had to re-install 2010 and "upgrade" They really need to bring back the option to skip the test ASAP. You can skip the test on a POP3 account but not IMAP

Solve the problem in this way:
Download WinEnabler, run it and click on it's tray icon until the word "On" appears.
Configure a new account as pop3, uncheck the test thick and save the account.
Edit the account and change pop3 to imap. Remember to configure all settings you need.
Uncheck the test thick and save the account.
You'll get two email folders for the same account. Just delete the older one with a right click and remove folder.
That's it.

Is there any way I can roll back to 2010?
I have 2013 and 2007.
I have the same problems as Jimbo45 plus I can't open up my older email at all. Most of my contacts know my older account and email address.
I have 2013 set up to use a new email address and it works just fine, except from a hotel room.
My older email address can't be set up at all under 2013, but does work on an older computer using 2007. My iphone 6 also works with the older email address.
I have to have two PCs to handle the email. I was trying to consolidate to one.
