Internet Explorer and Netflix Don't Work

Hello Everyone,

Windows 8 seems to have more bugs than an ant farm.

1) On a new Dell computer when I click on Internet Explorer in the Start Screen it opens the Desktop version of IE.

2) The Start Screen Netflix App does not work. When I attempt to play a movie there is a silly "whoops" message says that I need to download windows updates and/or update video drivers. I spent two hours on the phone with Dell Tech support and they couldn't solve the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

PerryR

Hello PerryR.

Sorry about your Netflix issue but have to disagree with your bugs comment. You most likely have installed Silverlight. Has the app ever worked? IMO, most problems are the result of user errors. My Netflix app, in both metro and desktop, has always worked. So many people are stuck thinking they need to run "cleaners" and "registry optimizers" and others install outdated programs (not all programs are compatible with 8). If the message says something, does that mean anything? Does your desktop version of Netflix work properly? Has the app ever worked properly?

Hello mdmd,

Thanks for the reply. Silverlight is installed and I can play Netflix movies in the browser but not via the Start Screen app. I would like to enjoy the "Immersive" full screen experience of Windows 8. When I try to play a movie with the Start Screen app I get an error message that says, "Whoops, something went wrong." It goes on to say that I need to update my drivers. But Dell Tech Support insists I have the latest drivers installed. I called Netflix and they didn't have a solution either.

Can't you use F11 to run IE10 in "Full Screen" mode?

Note:
I don't have/use Netflix.

I empathize with your calling tech support. I would rather suffer than ever call someone. Has the app ever worked? The Whoops message might appear today and not tomorrow. How long have you had this issue? Do any video metro apps work? ... like Live(Free)TV?

or You Tube apps?

The desktop Full Screen Netflix app is IMO better... has better features, like continue to play and search...
It's just that the metro app has a different "feel" to it and has a different type of list screen of videos...also the metro app auto pauses when flipping to another app while the desktop version continues to play in the background.
