Ouch! Just as I thought I'd pretty much whipped all the little problems with my new upgrade to Windows 8 Pro I got a big surprise tonight....as follows:

All the programs I currently use are booting up and running just fine. Even some of the old ones.

BUT....tonight I decided to do my Web surfing from my computer room using the Win 8 PC rather than my Win 7 laptop in the living room. Imagine my surprise to find that a fairly large share of my favorite sites would either not boot up at all or would be so slow as to make using or reading them impossible. Notice....I said a large share. Some sites come right up and work fine. Some come up quickly but then bog down and I can't move around because it is so slow. Then....there are the ones that just would not completely come up at all.

I got shook up so I headed for the living room and fired up the laptop which runs on Win 7. Everything was OK and worked just fine on it. So now I don't really know what is going on. The only difference between the two PC's (other than the laptop is Win 7 and the desktop is the new upgrade to Win 8) is that the desktop unit is connected via Ethernet cable to the router while the laptop is connected via wi-fi. I tried using both my FireFox browser (version 17) and the Internet Explorer that came with Win 8. Same problem with both of them.

The desktop Internet function was working just great until I upgraded to Win 8. This is a deal killer. If I can't figure this one out and fix it.....I'm going back to Win 7 and (I guess) just count the money I paid for it as the price of a bad mistake on my part.

Anyone have ANY ideas what I should look for?

If you have any third party security installed (Norton, ESET, Avast etc), uninstall it and see whether it helps, you could also try flushing dns (may be some broken links cause slow down).

Thank you much for your reply and suggestions, brummyfan. I was sure that all security software other than what came in Win 8 had been deleted and all traces removed. But I double checked and, indeed, only the Win 8 security is running.

So...next step....I flushed the DNS cache as you suggested. It worked fine. Result? Didn't help.

So now....sort of as a next to last resort....I dug out my Windows 8 pro disk and I'm running the install again to see if it will correct any problems. If that doesn't help....I'll make sure my backups are current and then format my hard drive and proceed with a complete Win 8 install from scratch instead of the upgrade from Win 7 that I did before. Yes.....I do have the full Win 8 version.

If that fails.....I'll reformat again and use the disk that came with my PC to reinstall Win 7 and to heck with Win 8.

I thought I had it whipped but suddenly things started going down hill and I've not been able to understand why.

As a kid I knew a TV repairman who told me that there are, in this world, experts and tinkerers. The tinkerers are the dangerous kind because they think they know what they are doing.....but don't. Guess I'm in that latter group. Which makes me very dangerous. Takes me twice as long to fix things-digital than an expert would take.

Again thanks for taking time to respond to my post.

The re-install of Windows 8 pro seems to have done the trick. For the last hour or so I've been accessing my favorite programs and also browsing around the Internet and there have been no slow downs or lock ups. I wish I knew what wrong action I took that caused the problem. Kind of a drastic solution because the re-install of Win 8 pro took well over an hour. OK....all's well that ends well.

Thanks again for your suggestions.
