no pop email in windows 8 email app?

I tried to add in my yahoo and xnet pop3 mail accounts into the windows 8 email app and apparently pop3 accounts cant be used, wow how silly.

I think i can get my xnet email changed to a imap account and yahoo as well, however from what i understand yahoo imap email doesnt work properly with windows 7 or windows 8 without a 3rd party app of some kind.

might try the above at some point, for now I will continue to use microsoft office outlook 2007 for my email, it kind of sucks because now my email isnt integrated into everything else, oh well.

    I'm frustrated as well.

I use Orange Freeserve Mail and that's POP as well.

I was hoping to integrate all my mail/calendar etc but this throws a spanner in the works.

Pretty much makes the Calendar useless as well if you use the Outlook version like I always have.

Anyone know an Orange workaround I'd be grateful to hear from you................

No POP mail servers is ridiculous. Why even have the ability to add a mail account when you can't even add the most standard of them all like a simple POP server which many are still using through their ISP.

I can't get mine to connect either. Even when I choose "Other Accounts" which has all the same parameters as the old Outlook had, using the same settings as before but no dice, it will NOT connect to my ISP for anything.

I won't get into the fact that if you try to add the old Outlook or Windows Live Messenger you need to also install the old .NET framework which instantly hoses your entire OP system.

After that sfc/scannow shows unfixable problems just from installing the old .NET 3.5, and also certain drivers were hosed and some Homegroup Icons are suddenly missing from Windows Explorer. Yes it took me three complete re-images to figure all this out. Don't believe me? Try it and you will see what I mean.

So because of this you can no longer use any of the old Windows Live essentials stuff, but you also can't connect to your original POP server so you have no way to access Outlook from your ISP through Windows 8 and you are forced to use the POS Metro version of Messenger which really sucks bad.

Nice work Msoft, maybe you should hire me to debug your systems.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about - in Mail, if you go to Settings > Accounts > Add > "Other Account", you see this:

Also, I'm not sure how you added .NET 3.5, but this does not happen if you use powershell and the 3.5 redist in the sxs folder of the Win8 or Server 2012 DVD. I have many, many Windows 8 machines with .NET 3.51 installed (via powershell and the Win8 ISO), and none of them have these issues.

problem is, trying adding a pop account, it says that it is not allowed. I read somewhere that microsoft is still working on the email app and that in the future there should be some tweaks to it.

Ah, I see. I've not tried to add a POP account, but from what I was told this would have been lit up for RTM. I guess it's coming in the next update or two. I've personally migrated my domain over to Hotmail (, so I haven't had a need for it since then - that wouldn't be easy if you're just using some random ISP's mail servers though.

My comment about .NET 3.5 still stands though .

You could setup an account to send/recieve mail from your pop acccount, and then add that account to your email app. I know you shouldnt HAVE to do this, but it is a workaround I suppose. At least until if/when they fix it.

All my mail is POP3 so I use Windows Live Mail which works great for me.
I also use Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker, all from Live Essentials.

I have .Net installed from Turn Features On and Off and have no problems.

Just to put my two cents in here also, I have the same problem, with not being able to add a pop3 account. However i don't even get that box up after clicking on Add Account, it goes straight to filling out the account details, and has nowhere to apply the pop instead of IMAP.
